On September 12th, the CDC issued an official Health Advisory related to Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), which provides additional guidance and recommendations to state health departments and healthcare providers.
Recommendations for healthcare providers include use of standard, contact and droplet precautions when caring for hospitalized patients with EV-D68 infection. For environmental disinfection of surfaces in healthcare settings, the guidance is to use a hospital grade disinfectant with an EPA label claim for any of several non-enveloped viruses (e.g. norovirus, poliovirus, rhinovirus, etc.).
Clorox Professional Products has a broad portfolio of EPA-registered surface disinfectants that meet these CDC recommendations. (see list below). Please note that this guidance allows for a broader list of recommended products from Clorox beyond those in the same family as enterovirus, as was previously shared.
As was shared last week, EV-D68 is one of many non-polio enteroviruses and is a member of the picornavirus family of viruses, which are small non-enveloped RNA viruses. Other viruses in the same family include coxsackievirus, echovirus, poliovirus and rhinovirus.
According to the CDC, non-polio enteroviruses like EV-D68 can be spread through close contact with an infected person, or indirectly by touching contaminated surfaces or objects then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
There is no vaccine to prevent against non-polio enteroviruses at this time. The CDC has issued the following guidance to prevent the spread of EV-D68 and other non-polio enterovirus infections. Recommendations include:
Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
